UX Design Internship

I interned at Medtronic from February 2023 to August 2023. During this time, I worked on redesigning the a remote monitoring platform, and optimizing it for smaller screens. Simultaneously this was also a part of my graduation project, at the National Institute of Design.

Working in healthcare was a completely different experience, I was fresh out of college and it took me a couple of months to get a good understanding of the domain that I worked in, Cardiovascular department.

Internship Overview

This internship gave me the chance to dive deep into healthcare design, contribute to evidence driven design, and applied data-driven insights from usability studies to reduce cognitive load and improve navigation. I helped build medical device software interfaces, that make it easier for healthcare providers like clinicians, physicans and doctors have a seamless experience.

Along the way, I connected with over 50 amazing professionals, advocated for inclusive practices, and saw the real impact of design on teams and users

Learnings

  1. My biggest learning was how much design relies on communication. Working with engineers, clinicians, and researchers taught me to translate complex design jargons into simple, shared language, which ensured faster processes.

  2. I also learned to welcome critique early; collaborative review with subject matter experts and mentors often surfaced insights I couldn’t have reached alone.

  3. My experience here fundamentally shifted how I approach design, I realized its more than working in silos, its team work, it depends on consistent feedback and reiterations, which ultimately leads to better accessible solutions.

Highlights

I’m deeply grateful for a team that not only supported me, but truly inspired me.

My mentor’s steady, thoughtful feedback shaped the way I think as a designer, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without that guidance. And beyond the work itself, the best part of my internship was the people, colleagues who turned into friends, and friendships I’ll carry with me long after the internship ended.
